We live in a time where everyone loves short, catchy words — like “Riz” in the States. In Thailand, people used to say, “May I please have one order of Kanom Jeeb?” but now you’ll often hear “Dumpling, please!” or “Jeep Dai Mai?” — short, fun, and easy. “Jeep Dai Mai” even has a playful double meaning: “Can I flirt with you?” It’s a phrase meant to make people smile and feel connected, just like our symbol of love — two fingers together.
Kanom Jeeb is our signature dish, known and loved worldwide. These steamed chicken and shrimp dumplings, inspired by Chinese dim sum, have been reimagined with Thai herbs and flavors. The word kanom means “snack,” and jeeb refers to their signature “pleated” shape.
Born from Chinese shumai brought by immigrants, Kanom Jeeb has become a Thai favorite — especially at morning markets and night festivals. Back in my college days, I remember long lines of students waiting for their favorite vendor before class. It’s the perfect start to the day: a cup of coffee and a few delicious dumplings.
